Ice storm April 2013 - Eisregen April 2013

A storm is in the forecast and our schools get closed for the day just in case, lol.  Of course, nothing major happened that day but the storm hit us over night and the next day.
Sections in our city where without power, some for just a few hours, some for longer.  We where in the longer section, 8 1/2 hrs without power, sounds like fun and it would be if we wouldn't have to worry about the sump pump in the basement.

Ein Sturm ist im Anmarsch und die Schulen machen schon mal als Vorsorge zu. Natürlich war an dem Tag alles ganz beim Alten aber dafür ging es dann in der Nacht los und am nächsten Tag hatten wir eine wunderschöne Eislandschaft und keinen Strom.  Bei manchen war der Strom nur für ein paar Stunden weg, bei uns gleich mal 8 1/2 Stunden was ja nicht so schlimm ist wäre da nicht die Sump Pump im Keller.

We can get by without heat, cooking food, watching TV etc but the pump needs power to pump any excess water away and out of the house (cold cellar).

Heizung, TV, essen kochen sind nicht so wichtig, das kann man alles ohne Probleme überbrücken aber kein Strom für die Pumpe ist schon schwieriger und noch dazu schüttete es wie verrückt.

And we had pouring rain on top of it which made the whole water situation a little scary.

 Lisa, Logan and I scooped water continuously for 3 hrs to make sure our basement would not flood from all the rain coming in through the pump system but luckily things calmed down after the rain had stopped.  The 3 hrs where hard though, lots and lots of water going down the toilet carried by buckets. I scooped 400 Liters of Water in 3 hrs, now do the math.

Lisa, Logan und ich waren für 3 Stunden mit Wasser schöpfen, Kübel tragen und ins Klo lehren beschäftigt und als es dann zum Regnen aufgehört hat hat sich die lange ein wenig beruhigt und wir konnten aufhören.  In 20 minuten hab ich alleine 400 Liter Wasser ins Klo geschüttet, jetzt das ganze mal 3 Stunden.

Logan build this technic Lego all by himself during the power outage, he did a great job and was totally proud of it.

Logan hat den Stromausfall genützt und ein cooles Technik Lego auto gebaut und er war ganz stolz weil er es ja ganz alleine geschafft hat.

This is an example of a sump pump. Its installed at the lowest point of the house, it collects any excess water from around the home and pumps it out away from the home.  Sounds great, but only if you have power :D

Unten ist ein Beispiel einer solchen Sump Pump.  Meistens sind sie in der Speisekammer im Keller installiert und sammelt das extra Wasser was sich so rund ums Haus ansammelt ein und pumpt es dann raus weg vom Haus, natürlich funktioniert das nur wenn man Strom hat.
